Our History
Matrix Surge Flow began as a solo project in late 2020 inside a cramped rental apartment in Setagaya, Tokyo. The founder, a former stylist for indie JP musicians, noticed that local thrift stores ignored y2k clothing while international shipping from the US cost a fortune. Meanwhile, tiktok fashion was exploding, but nobody in Japan offered cyber y2k pieces with local quality control. On a cold November night, the first 15 items — all vintage streetwear — were photographed on an iPhone and listed on a free marketplace. Everything sold in 90 minutes.
By spring 2021, we rented our first micro-warehouse: a 200-square-foot space with no air conditioning. The korean fashion influence entered our collection after a research trip to Seoul's Dongmyo Flea Market. We realized that aesthetic clothes in Korea had sharper silhouettes and bolder color blocking compared to JP kawaii clothing. We started blending both styles. Customers noticed immediately. Our first original design — a cyber y2k patchwork hoodie — became a local viral hit after a JP dancer wore it in a music video. We reinvested every yen into more trendy outfits.
The real breakthrough came in late 2022. A major tiktok fashion influencer from Los Angeles stumbled upon our alt fashion collection and featured our holographic pants in a video that reached 2 million views. Overnight, our aesthetic wear shipments went from 20 packages a day to over 200. We had to move to our current location in Shibuya within two weeks. That move allowed us to hire our first full-time team members: a korean fashion specialist and a kawaii clothing designer. We finally became a true trendy fashion store with a physical showroom.
Today, Matrix Surge Flow ships to 34 countries and restocks y2k clothing every Friday at 8 PM JST. Our vintage streetwear collection has over 1,500 five-star reviews. We've hosted two sold-out cyber y2k fashion shows in Harajuku. But we never forgot our Setagaya apartment roots. Every package still includes a handwritten thank-you note from one of our team members. We are still the same alt fashion enthusiasts, just with a bigger warehouse and bigger dreams. Our tiktok fashion community continues to grow, and we're just getting started.
